5 Tips for Not Overdoing It on Thanksgiving
This time of year, it’s easy to take another helping of mashed potatoes or just one more slice of pie. And before you know it your belly is aching and you’re connecting to a virtual doctor on your Zealyte+ app. Don’t let this Thanksgiving put you in front of your phone with an online doctor visit.
Instead, use these seven tips to feel great before AND after that amazing feast.
ONE: STAY AWARE OF YOUR CALORIES
Just because your aunt brought a double batch of her famous apple pie doesn’t mean you need to double your intake. Choose your calories wisely and don’t go overboard.
TWO: LET YOUR FOOD SETTLE
Before you ask to have the stuffing passed back to you for another helping, let your food settle. It takes a few minutes for the “I’m full” signal to make it from your stomach to your brain. So, wait a little while, enjoy the company you’re with, maybe have a drink of water and then recheck your appetite. You might notice you are satisfied and do not need more.
THREE: DON’T IGNORE THE VEGGIES
With all of the decadent desserts and mouthwatering meats in abundance, don’t forget about your veggies. Whether they are served as an appetizer or side dish, make sure you are getting them in. And here’s a crazy idea - try them without being buried in a mountain of sauce.
FOUR: DON’T ARRIVE FAMISHED
It’s a great idea to have a snack before arriving at your dinner celebration. This will keep you from diving in and grabbing one of everything you see when you walk through the door. You could eat something as simple as a small apple or maybe a few slices of cheese and whole wheat crackers. You just want to take the edge off.
FIVE: TAKE A WALK
After eating a large meal, don’t let your next move be to the couch or recliner. Instead, lace up your shoes and take a walk. This will help burn off some of those extra calories and if you’re with friends and family it will be another opportunity to connect and enjoy one another.
Most of all take time this Thanksgiving to focus on those things you are thankful for. A grateful heart is a good medicine.
